[Japan] 11 Things to Eat While in Japan

4:04 PM

There were so many things that I tried back when I was in Japan, that I don’t think I could write down each and every food that I tried in a specific post. I tried to compile some of it into one post and I still left with few places to be reviewed. Well since Japan was so awesome, I don’t really mind. Meanwhile here are some of the best food I tried during my trip to Japan.

Disclaimer: the numbering on the list doesn’t mean it is the best or whatsoever.
It is just the number of what I had first to my very last meal in Japan.

1. Hokkaido Ramen Santouka

Shio Ramen
Probably the best ramen I have ever eat so far. Hokkaido Ramen Santouka is a Japanese ramen restaurant chain that has been popular all across the globe. Started way back in 1980s, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka keept their authenticity until this day. My friends and I ordered their Shio Ramen, Shoyu Ramen and Spicy Miso Ramen. I forgot the exact price of each dish, but those 3 (three) bowl of ramen cost us about 2400 yen so probably each of it was around 800 yen.

Shoyu Ramen
I really love their soup which has this thick delicious broth without leaving those greasy after taste in your palate. The Shio Ramen has this more salty and a hint of sourness on their soup, which probably caused by the pickled plum that given on top of the meal. While the Shoyu Ramen has a slight taste of fish sauce on the soup, which made the ramen taste unique. And last but not least, the Spicy Miso Ramen which has this subtle miso flavor and a perfect balance of chili pepper. I love how they not overpowering each other, instead they are making a beautiful harmony in your mouth.

Spicy Miso Ramen
I also love the char siu that given in each ramen. It has the perfect thickness, beautifully charred grilled skin, tender and also juicy. And in case you guys are wondering, yes it is a pork char siu. And yes, this ramen is not halal.

2. Sapporo Beer
When in Sapporo, try Sapporo Beer.

Sapporo Beer is brewed by Sapporo Breweries Ltd that found in 1876. It is the oldest brand of beer in Japan. I really looking forward to try their beer since this is one of the oldest beer company. Also the fact that I had the chance to try it directly on the place where it began was plain awesome. I poured the beer into a small glass (not pictured). The beer pours into a nice light gold color and a quite thick bubbles on top of it. I’m not a beer drinker but this one has this lemony soda taste with a subtle malt flavor after which I really love.

3. Coca Cola Clear

This was on my must try food list while in Japan since this thing hasn’t get in to Indonesia yet. First of all, I’m not a soda drinker because sometimes it made me feel bloated but this one was surprisingly quite nice. I think Coca Cola Clear doesn’t have as much soda as the usual ones. However it kinda affect the flavor because I don’t really get those unique coke taste. Still worth to try though!

4. Suntory Peach Tea
This one was also on my must try food list since I heard so many good things about it. I’ve tried their Milk Tea and Lemon Tea before back when I was in Singapore and it taste quite nice. However their Peach Tea was just okay for me. I can barely taste the peach in it. But it was still a nice choice when you are looking for something different though.

5. Apple Pie
From what I read all across the internet, Aomori is famous by their apple. So when we arrived in Aomori, apple based food is what we were looking for. Luckily, as soon as we arrived at the Nebuta Museum, there was a food truck that sells this cute little apple pie. Each of the apple pie cost around 300 yen.

I love how crispy the pastry on the outside yet so soft and fluffy on the inside. The apple filling was given very generous, sweet with a little bit of sour and has a hint of cinnamon taste to it. The apple was soft yet a bit crispy which made a beautiful harmony in your mouth. Gosh! Just by writing this, I’m already drooling all over my laptop!

6. Gyutan Sumiyaki Rikyu
On the 5th day, we move out from Ninohe to Sendai by train. Once we arrived there, we go straight to Gyutan Sumiyaki Rikyu for lunch who is famous for their gyutan. In case you don’t know, gyutan is a Japanese terms for grilled beef tongue. The price for each portion is around 1782 yen and you got a plate of delicious gyutan, a bowl of rice, a soup and some salads.

The gyutan was seasoned nicely, I like the food even though some parts were a bit hard to chew. The soup that was given with the set meals was also really nice. It has this clear yet strong taste broth. I would recommend you to try this because Sendai is quite famous for their gyutan.

7. MOS Burger

Before we took our train to Tokyo, we had our brunch at MOS Burger. I ordered their Teriyaki Chicken Burger that cost me around 360 yen. I really love the burger! I can tell that the burger was made by order cause it was that fresh. I also love how the chicken was well-seasoned and cooked perfectly yet still so juicy.

8. Marion Crepes

We were strolling around Harajuku when we suddenly saw this cute little shop that sells crepes. We instantly have this urge to buy it. We decided to buy the Strawberry and Chocolate Crepes which cost about 800-ish yen. Sadly there were nothing special about the crepes but I still love how rich the chocolate ice cream taste. The crepe skin was also quite nice. But to think about it, spending 800 yen for a single crepe was probably over rated for this one.

9. Shozo

Last day in Japan, we decided to go on a hunt for some coffee. After days of googling, I found one that near our walk route that day. Shozo Coffee is a small coffee shops that located just a few steps from Omotesando Station. The coffee shop was very small but somehow has this inviting feel and very cozy. I ordered their Latte in medium size for about 400 yen.

I like how strong the coffee smells. The coffee has this perfect balance between milk and coffee. It also has this perfect thick/creamy consistency that made it quite unique to me. In conclusion, I regret did not buy another cup.

10. Yoshinoya

Ate Yoshinoya around Shibuya for a quick break after a long shopping. Yes, I did some shopping when I was in Japan. Surprise huh? Me too.

The one that I ate was their Chicken Mayo Don which cost around 400-ish yen. I love how crispy the chicken on the outside yet so juicy and tender on the inside. The mayo taste quite different than usual mayo, probably they are a homemade mayo. However the overall meal was quite dry that I had to drink a lot of water afterwards. Luckily the water was free tho’. I would love to have more sauce to make the meal more cohesive (is it even the right word for food?) and more delightful to munch.

11. Gindaco
My last meal in Japan which turn out to be so amazing! I heard a lot of Gindaco Takoyaki back when I was in Jakarta. I saw a lot of pictures of them on Instagram and this was on top of my ‘to eat in Japan’ list. The only thing I regret about it was I didn’t try it sooner.

The takoyaki taste so nice! It was very fluffy and the tako (squid) on the inside was big and very tender. The outer parts was very crispy and the sauce was given generously that I even thought to lick it off its plate. It was so yummy that even my friend and I was considering to buy another one.
